`The first ten hours of my Internship were a little scary and a little
stressful to begin with. All I was assigned to do for the first fifteen hours of
my internship was just to drive. My partner and I had to drive from Phoenix,
Arizona all the way to Sacramento, California. We weren’t driving just any
vehicle either. We drove a 40 ft RV! This was one of the craziest adventures I
have ever been on but when I get into my job field I am going to have to
constantly drive places and do lots of traveling in general. As for the first
day of my internship, I believe we both did very well considering neither of us
had ever driven something that big.

The first day of throws camps we were up at 6 a.m. starting to prepare
for the full day of drilling. Day one in Sacramento I was in charge of making
sure all the kids were up in time to make it to the track before 8 a.m. and had
to be sure that everyone was accounted for. Once we walked the mile hike over to
the track the real work began. From 8 am till 11:30 a.m. we were on the hot
track doing drill after drill and coaching the young kids in order to implant
the perfect form in their brain. Repetition is the only way to do so and
repetition is what they do the first day of camp. I had gone through Johns
coaches course so I knew what I was coaching them but being with as many as 8
other coaches, I was still learning all the time. After lunch, we had a lecture, free time, dinner and then
we were back at it after dinner until after 9 p.m. After that they had time to
shower and I was off doing bed checks to make sure everyone was in their correct
rooms.

Driving from Sacramento California to Tiffin Ohio was an adventure to say the least. The drive in the 40 ft. R.V. with a 40 ft. trailer attached to the back. Being a coach, traveling is part of the job description. We had to drive over 30 hours to get to Ohio for the camp starting on the next Monday. In order to make it in time we had to drive all the way through the night so while someone drove the other would sleep.Another part of the job is dealing with the problems that come along the way. we stopped at a gas station that had bad gas and put water in the tank. this set us back a good eight hours. We arrived in Tiffin around 9 pm Sunday night. this was the beginning of the exhaustion.

Starting at 7 am this morning wasnt as easy as waking up in Sacramento. However, the Tiffin camp seemed like home and started off really smooth. The kids were ready to listen and start learning. At this point I was starting to get really good at calling the orders part of the camp because I was in charge of role call and in order to get and keep everyone's attention. This being said, John put me in charge of calling out the commands . If I made a mistake he would correct me and I learned from everything he corrected me on. He would also follow me around and make sure i was teaching and coaching the kids the correct things. I did really well and was even more excited to start my job search.

The third day of the Tiffin camp, there were many good things going on ath the camp and everyone was making progress. The only thing going bad was my first arguement with the person I was doing my internship with. This was really unexpected and surprising but it was not all bad at the same time because it gave me the opportunity to experience in dealing with disagreements in the workplace. I was able to go to my supervisor and adjust things so that the situation would be more fair and it could be settled with little arguement in the end.
July 12, 2013
On the last day of the Tiffin camp, everyone became extremely close and it was even hard for some of the kids to leave their roommates. This was a good feeling to see the kids have such a good time at the camp and still be disciplined enough to learn a lot and make a lot of progress. After everyone left we were in charge of cleaning everything up and packing everything into the R.V. but we had a pleasant surprise before we left. John decided not to fly to the next camp and helped us drive to the Kansas camp. It was a lot of fun being able to just relax in the R.V. with an Olympian and pick his brain with any questions we had. Not everyone can say they are able to do that. That drive went really smooth and John was able to see how difficult it was to drive the "beast."
July 15th, 2013
The first day of the Kansas camp started off good just like the others and here we were able to meet some really well known high school coaches who tend to produce really good throwers out of their area. Most of them are successful and go to college and continue to throw well there also. One man was Caleb Seal, his throwing camps are held in the summer during the week on certain weeks and during the school year he will hold weekend camps for people who are without coaches and need some guidance. He was extremely interesting because not only did he have a full time job but he would also coach all these throwers from all over Oklahoma and still enjoy horse racing in his free time. His coaching style was very similar to Johns because he attended Johns phase 1 coaches clinic. Another coach was the Wichita State coach, he was a great guy as well with lots of knowledge.

On Wednesday, John really put Jay and I to the test. He had to leave the camp and put us in charge of everything. We made all the decisions and were the people who made the calls on who did what and when. We already knew the drills and schedule like the back of our hand from the previous camps. The repetition gets implanted into your brain after you hear and do the same thing day after day. This was a great feeling to have the approval of John Godina. It also felt great to be able to know that I was helping people improve their form and with this knowledge it was going to be able to make a change in my form as well. This was my favorite day so far!
July 22, 2013
The weekend was a long one having to back track from Kansas to Pennsylvania. More coffee was definitely needed after having to work extra hard at the last camp. Having responsibilities felt great but after driving I felt like I could sleep for weeks. Today is the start of the Pennsylvania camp and once again John was going to only be there for two and a half days. This was our final camp though and we were ready to perfect this one. While doing this internship I forgot to include that Jay and I were still trying to train on our own as well. There were many days that I wasn't physically able to because of being tired and dehydration. This first day of camp was a rainy day that made everyone complain and this was the first camp to complain but we stayed outside anyway and drilled for hours. The athletes were not happy at the time but they will soon realize that it will pay off.
July 24, 2013
Today John left again and I was in charge this time of giving a lecture. I was not given much notice but because I had to do it, I made something up that was important in the throwing world and something that would catch the athletes attention. They were starting to get tired at this point and it was extremely hard to get their attention. I decided that I would do a med ball routine with different exercises that had to do with throwing and each specific throwing event. I made sure that I would explain it clearly then demo it and then allow them to try it with a partner and critique form. My lecture was a little shorter than most of the coaches but was better than the kids going two hours without any knowledge. It was a learning experience for me with dealing with spiratic situations.
July 26, 2013
The last day of the last camp I had mixed feelings about. My journey of learning and experience was coming to an end but I was so tired that I felt I was ready for it to come to an end as well. Waiting for the last kids parents to come I thought about my future career and I couldn't see myself doing anything other than coaching. There is always something new and improved that you can learn. Throwing is something that most people would look at as boring but I see way more. Before I did this internship I looked at throwing as fun and a hobby but now when someone throws I tend to pick out everything they did right or wrong and think of a way they can fix it. I even enjoy it now more than I ever have because I know it is something I can do the rest of my life.

Today we are heading back to Arizona. We figured out that if we drove basically all the way through we could get there Saturday night and would be able to wake up in time to get one more training session in at Athletes Performance. Everything went really smooth until we got into Arizona. The GPS took us a way through the mountains that was extremely steep for such a big rig. Not only were we scared to death going down that mountain but we got stuck in a 4 hour long traffic jam because a semi had jack knifed. That made us feel a whole lot better.....NOT! Either way we were extremely close to being back to Mesa where we needed to drop off the R.V. and it was a relief. Once we got back, we had to make sure that all the paper work was together and in order for John from all the camps. That was my job. There was nothing missing and the last day we were able to get our tired selves out of bed and do one last training session at AP.
July 29, 2013
Today we got to just go around Arizona and do whatever we wanted so of course instead of sight seeing we went and trained with John. Any opportunity to get coaching from him we took the whole trip. It would be extremely dumb of us if we didn't. He helped me to really see where my problem areas were in my form and a a way to fix them myself when I was practicing on my own. This trip was the coolest thing I have ever had the opportunity to do. I learned so much and figured out exactly what I want to do with my life. If I never got the opportunity to do that again my life wouldn't be satisfied. Those were four of my favorite weeks ever! I never would have thought that something like that could be a life changing event.
July 30, 2013
Heading home was bittersweet. We got all of our bags packed and Johns parents took us to the airport. While in the airport, Jay and I had tons of things to talk about. We however were so exhausted on the plane that we slept most of the way. When I got back to Tiffin all I could think about was coaching and wanting that as my career so the closest thing I had to that was going out with my teammates and helping them. Without even knowing it I was still able to do something similar to what I had done at the camps. I also slept for a whole day once I got back!
